Artists' statement

1947.0

A typed letter from Raphael Soyer to "Dear Fellow Artist," enclosing a statement from a "group of artists" regarding the "status of our profession today." The statement, approved by 31 artists, deplores the growing dominance of art theorists and museum officials who were causing art, particularly abstract art, to become esoteric and exclusive. Among the artists whose names appear on the statement are Jacob Lawrence, William Gropper, Chaim Gross, Edward Hopper, Xavier Gonzalez, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Soyer and his brother Moses, Isabel Bishop, and Abraham Rattner.
